Psychodynamic Psychiatrists to Meet in San Francisco
Abstract
As the program demonstrates, the AAPDP’s mission is keeping psychodynamic therapy an integral part of the psychiatric profession.
Psychiatrists interested in psychotherapy and psychodynamics are invited to attend the 57th annual meeting of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry (AAPDP), which is being held in conjunction with APA’s 2013 annual meeting. The meeting, which will focus on suicide, will take place May 16 to 18 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel at 335 Powell Street. The AAPDP’s mission is keeping psychodynamic therapy an integral part of the psychiatric profession.
In what now has become a tradition and a statement about the AAPDP’s strong ties with APA, the keynote address will be given by APA President Dilip Jeste M.D., who will speak on “Wisdom: From Psychology to Neuroscience.” The opening speaker is Mardi Horowitz, M.D., who will discuss “Grieving as Well as Possible,” and the concluding speaker is former APA President Herbert Pardes, M.D., who will discuss “Psychodynamics in a Turbulent World of Health Reform.”
Friday morning’s program will consist of the symposium “On the Nature of the Clinical Applications of Psychodynamics” and two consecutive panels, “Transcultural and Intergenerational Aspects of Suicide” and “Clinical Dilemmas and Therapeutic Issues.” The latter is a workshop sponsored by the New York Medical College Psychoanalytic Institute in which residents will share clinical experiences to be discussed by the masters.
On Friday at noon, there will be two workshops: “Suicide as Impact of Trauma and Trauma as Impact of Suicide” and “Relational Suicide Assessment With Particular Attention to Medical Students.” Later that afternoon, the documentary film “Don’t Change the Subject” will be shown. The documentary’s author, filmmaker Michael Stutz, will be interviewed by AAPDP President Michael Blumenfield, M.D., followed by a question and answer session.
Other interesting panels and workshops will continue on Saturday and will address countertransference issues in suicide, treatment of the suicidal adolescent, the psychodynamics of physician-assisted suicide, suicide issues in the military, the therapeutic use of dreams, and Jungian perspectives on suicide. ■
