APA Honors Contributions to Psychiatry

An esteemed group of psychiatrists and others working to improve life for people with mental illness were honored at APA's 2013 annual meeting in San Francisco in May for their dedication to psychiatry and mental health causes.

Each year APA honors a number of individuals who have worked to improve the lives of people with mental illness in many ways, such as clinical practice, research, and public-policy and advocacy work.

These are the honorees and the awards they received, as listed in the program book of APA's 57th Convocation of Distinguished Fellows:

William C. Menninger Memorial Convocation Lecture: Susan Greenfield, CBE, D. Phil., a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford who heads a multi-disciplinary research group exploring novel brain mechanisms linked to neurodegenerative diseases. Greenfield is the author of The Private Life of the Brain (2003), ID:The Quest for Identity in the 21st Century (2008), and You and Me: The Neuroscience of Identity (2011).

Special Presidential Commendations:George Alexopoulos, M.D., Stephen Tobin and Dr. Arnold M. Cooper Professor in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, vice chair for geriatric psychiatry, and co-director of the aging center for research and clinical care at Weill Medical College of Cornell University; Peter F. Buckley, M.D., dean of the Medical College of Georgia; Kenneth G. Busch, M.D., APA distinguished life fellow; Paramjit K. Distinguished Service Award:Ronald M. Burd, M.D., chair of APA’s Committee on the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale, Codes, and Reimbursements; David J. Kupfer, M.D., chair of the DSM-5 Task Force, on behalf of all DSM-5 contributors.

Organizational Distinguished Service Award:The John A. Hartford Foundation, an organization founded to improve the health of older Americans, providing over $9 million in grants to the American Federation for Aging Research.

APA Blanche F. Ittleson Award for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry:Jay Giedd, M.D., chief of the Unit on Brain Imaging in the Child Psychiatry Branch at NIMH.

APIRE/Kempf Fund Award for Research Development in Psychobiological Psychiatry (senior researcher):Bruce E. Wexler, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Yale University; (junior researcher): Toral Surti, M.D., Ph.D., research fellow at Yale University and the Veterans Administration.

APA/Lilly Resident Research Award:Jatinder M. Chawla, M.D., child and adolescent psychiatry fellow at Hofstra-Northshore LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University; Sean X.
