APA Moving to New Home

APA is moving. At its October 8 to 9 meeting in Orlando, the Board of Trustees voted to move APA headquarters from downtown Washington, D.C., to less-expensive quarters just across the Potomac River in Arlington, Va. The move is scheduled to take place in late August 2002. The Division of Government Relations will remain in Washington, D.C., however, to facilitate its advocacy work on Capitol Hill.

After a task force of APA leaders appointed by the Board reviewed 30 properties in the District of Columbia and its close-in suburbs, it recommended the building that has been the headquarters of USA Today since it was built 20 years ago. The building is three blocks across the Key Bridge from Washington and one block from a stop on the region’s Metro subway system.

Medical Director Steven Mirin, M.D., pointed out that leases on several floors of the current headquarters building will be up for renewal next year, and the building’s owners said that they planned to increase the rent on those floors substantially. Mirin noted that the move will save APA approximately $500,000 annually over the next 15 years.
