Assembly Honors Several DBs For Disaster-Response Efforts

Aside from the Profile of Courage Award (see story on Original article: page 5), the following awards were bestowed or cited during the fall meeting of the APA Assembly:

Awards for valiant responses to the events of September 11, 2001:

• The New Jersey Psychiatric Association

• The New York County District Branch

• The New York State Psychiatric Association

• The Society of Uniformed Services Psychiatrists

• The APA central office staff

Assembly Warren Williams Speaker Awards were presented by two APA Areas. The awards are given in memory of Warren Williams, M.D., who was Assembly speaker in 1973-74. These awards were established in 1984 and are funded by an annual grant from the McNeil Pharmaceutical Company. Each of APA’s seven geographic areas receives $1,000 to bestow annually and may choose to divide the fund among more than one recipient. The Area Councils select the people or programs to whom they will give their annual award for outstanding contributions to psychiatry and mental health.

• Area 2: Herbert Peyser, M.D., of New York City, for his service as Area 2 Trustee and for assistance he has provided to the Assembly over the years.

• Area 4: Richard Finn, M.D., of Iowa City, Iowa, and Richard Thurrell, M.D., of Madison, Wis., for long-standing service to APA, the Assembly, and their district branches.

Assembly Speaker Awards

• The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, represented by NAMI Executive Director Richard Birkel, Ph.D., in recognition of NAMI’s advocacy for persons with mental illnesses.

• The National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association, represented by its president, John R. Bush, in recognition of the group’s advocacy for persons with mental illnesses (this award will be presented at the Assembly’s spring 2002 meeting).

• The National Mental Health Association, represented by NMHA President and CEO Michael Faenza, in recognition of NMHA’s advocacy for persons with mental illnesses. ▪
