APA Climbs the Hill Again
Legislative representatives from APA’s district branches came to Washington, D.C., for APA’s semiannual Federal Legislative Institute. Key legislators from both sides of the aisle in Congress discussed their efforts to advance medical privacy, patient protection, and parity, among other issues. The DB representatives met with their state legislators in Congress to present their views and talked informally with many of them at a reception.

Rep. William Jefferson (D-La., right) is the winner of APA’s 2000 Distinguished Legislator Award for his support of legislation to end abusive managed care practices. The award was presented by Jeremy Lazarus, M.D., chair of APA’s Joint Commission on Government Relations, at last month’s Federal Legislative Institute in Washington, D.C. The other winner of the award, Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.), was honored for his advocacy of quality psychiatric care and patient confidentiality in the Veterans Administration.
