Term Feeds Stigma

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/pn.39.7.0066a

I admire Dr. Angela Harper’s statements about the change in her understanding of addiction in the Residents’ Forum in the January 2 issue.

I would like to point out using the term “addict” is not just a matter of semantics but contributes to the stigma Dr. Harper mentions in her article.

With that said, it is pleasing to see that more people are getting involved in addiction psychiatry, which no doubt will be an expanding field for years to come.
