Risk Management Seminars Offered

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/pn.40.10.00400028

Q. I have attended several general risk management seminars over the past few years. Many do not address topics specific to psychiatrists. Does The Psychiatrists' Program offer risk management seminars?

A. Psychiatric-specific risk management seminars are presented by Professional Risk Management Services Inc. (PRMS), managers of The Psychiatrists' Program. Experienced clinical, legal, insurance, and claims professionals reinforce basic risk management skills and techniques as well as discuss current professional liability trends in the psychiatric field.

These risk management seminars are free for current Program participants. As a benefit of participation in The Psychiatrists' Program, attendees are eligible to receive a 5 percent premium reduction on their Program insurance premium. (In New York state, Program participants must complete a basic risk management course with a written follow-up every two years to receive and maintain the premium discount.) Non-Program participants can attend for $395. Discounts are available for early career psychiatrists and members-in-training. Lunch and refreshments are also included.

The title of the seminar being presented this summer is “From Theory to Practice: Risk Management and Patient Safety.” Here is the schedule:

June 18: Hyatt Arlington, Arlington, Va.

July 22: Wyndham Palace Resort and Spa, Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Aviation safety expert and former U.S. Navy pilot Richard Clark, L.W.P., will discuss how aviation risk management and safety techniques dramatically decrease error rates and how those concepts can be applied to health care risk management and patient safety.

September 30: Northeast Conference Center, Westerville, Ohio

Registration information can be obtained online at<www.psychprogram.com> or by phone at (800) 245-3333, ext. 347.

Reminder Regarding Legion Proof of Claim Form

PRMS reminds you that if you were covered by a Legion Insurance Company malpractice insurance policy at any time from May 1, 1988, to mid-2003 (or represent the estate of a psychiatrist who had Legion coverage during this time) and have not submitted a Proof of Claim form, please visit the Pennsylvania Insurance Department's Web site at<www.ins.state.pa.us> or the Psychiatrists' Purchasing Group Web site at<www.psychpurchasing.com> for more information and a downloadable claim form.

PRMS suggests that all participants insured by Legion during the period mentioned file a Proof of Claim Form to protect your interests in connection with any malpractice claim(s) that may have been filed against you or that you think may be filed against you in the future.

This column is provided by PRMS, manager of the Psychiatrists' Program, for the benefit of members. More information about the Program is available by visiting its Web site at<www.psychprogram.com>; calling (800) 245-3333, ext. 389; or sending an e-mail to .
