APA Leader Has It Right

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/pn.41.17.0035c

As I read the words of APA President Steven Sharfstein, M.D., in the June 16 issue— “.. .we must be there as advocates for our patients”—the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. His message was in the speech he delivered at APA's 2006 annual meeting in which he urged APA members to advocate for a single-payer, universal health care system.

This is exactly the attitude and the moral space that this issue must have from all health care professionals if we are to overcome the profit power of the private insurance/pharmaceutical industrial complex.
