Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson performs at the 12th Annual Staglin Family Music Festival for Mental Health in September in Rutherford, Calif. The daylong festival, held on the grounds of the Napa Valley winery owned by Garen and Shari Staglin, raised $3.8 million for research on serious mental illness.

The Staglins created the festival a few years after their son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The family has helped raise a total of about $30 million to date.

Each year the festival includes a scientific symposium open to the public free of charge. This year's speaker was Daniel Weinberger, M.D., of the National Institute of Mental Health. Guests who purchased tickets then attended the reception and wine tasting, followed by the concert and a dinner prepared by Chef Suzanne Goin. Goin is the daughter of former APA President Marcia Goin, M.D., and owner/chef of Lucques in West Hollywood, Calif., and A.O.C. in Los Angeles.

“We created the music festival to make a day of celebration, as well as awareness and fundraising, so that we can fund research that will help us to identify the causes and eventually the cures for mental illness,” Garen Staglin told Psychiatric News in an interview last year.
