What You Should Know About Health Care Reform

Do you feel you are still in the dark when it comes to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act? The Publishing Division of APA, including Psychiatric Services, American Journal of Psychiatry, and Psychiatric News, and the Department of Government Relations (DGR) have put together a manual to help you better understand how the new health care reform law works and how it may affect you and your patients. "Health Care Reform: A Primer for Psychiatrists" is posted at <www.appi.org/SiteCollectionDocuments/Journals/PSY/HealthCareReform.pdf>. It can be accessed from the Psychiatric Services Web site or DGR's Health Reform site. These are among the many topics you will find discussed:

  • How should the "market" for new health insurance plans be set up?

  • Will coverage of mental health services be adequate?

  • Can the quality and efficiency of care be improved through better integration of mental and physical health care?
