Psychopharmacology Master Course to Offer MOC Credit

For the first time, APA is offering an opportunity to earn CME credit toward meeting maintenance of certification (MOC) requirements through an innovative and interactive course at this year’s annual meeting. Participants in the “Psychopharmacology” master course, directed by Alan Schatzberg, M.D., will be eligible to earn both Self-Assessment/CME (part 2 of MOC) and Performance Assessment Chart Review (part 4 of MOC) credit.

The course will be held Tuesday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New York Hilton Midtown. It will cover the latest information on the pharmacologic treatment of major psychiatric disorders and include case discussions.

For the self-assessment activity, participants will take a pre-test using an audience response system (ARS). After each question has been projected on a screen and participants have entered their answer into the ARS, the responses will be tallied by percentage and projected along with the correct answer. A study guide with rationales and references will be provided at the conclusion of the course, and participants will be instructed on how to access peer comparisons.

For this live clinical Performance in Practice (PIP) module (chart-review) activity, participants will be asked to review five charts before the course. They should choose one of the following medication classes for the chart review: SSRIs, benzodiazepines, atypical antipsychotics, or anticonvulsants/lithium. APA will send those participating in the clinical PIP activity four quality measures that should be assessed on the five charts for one of the medication classes. They do not need to share this information with the course leaders, APA, or the ABPN, but they should make personal notes about areas where they may be deficient and be prepared to discuss any clinical issues or present cases in the course’s breakout sessions.

After the meeting, participants who wish to obtain MOC self-assessment credit must log in to the APA learning management system, evaluate the CME activity, and claim their CME credit for both Stage A and Stage B of the PIP module for one of the medication classes. To finish the clinical PIP module, participants must review five more charts (the same patient or different patients) six months to two years after the course and note improvements, access the evaluation for the Psychopharmacology PIP on the APA learning management system at www.apaeducation.org, and complete the evaluation, as for any other CME activity.
