Camp APA Ensures City Is Kid Friendly
So you want to bring your kids with you to APA’s 2003 annual meeting in San Francisco, but you’re not sure how to entertain them while you’re attending scientific sessions?
APA has the answer for you: Send them to camp!
Camp APA will be headquartered at the San Francisco Marriott but will transport children—both figuratively and literally—to exotic adventures on site and in the San Francisco area.
The program is run by ACCENT on Children’s Arrangements Inc., whose child care specialists are certified in both CPR and pediatric first aid. All staff, which includes teachers and mothers, have completed ACCENT’s specialized training program and have had their references thoroughly checked.Activities are planned on the basis of the participating children’s ages—from six months to 17 years—and center around a different theme each day. For example, one day the children will learn about San Francisco’s landmarks, while on another day, they will get a taste of the old West by taking a two-stepping lesson, designing wild-horse puppets, and making up tall tales to create a book.Children above the age of 6 have the option of participating in exciting field trips in the San Francisco area. On Monday, May 19, the children will visit the Exploratorium, where they will enjoy more than 650 science, art, and human-perception exhibits within San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts.
A tour of Alcatraz will capture the children’s imagination on Tuesday, May 20. They will take a ferry to “The Rock,” which housed such gangsters as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly.
And finally, it’ll be a day of talking to the animals when the children visit the world-famous San Francisco Zoo on Wednesday, May 21. They can groom lifestock at the Children’s Zoo, collect eggs at the Family Farm, and inspect insects up close at the Insect Zoo.
The cost for children under 36 months is $50 for a half day and $90 for a full day; over that age, the cost is $40 for a half day and $65 for a full day. Parents can either provide lunch or purchase it for $15 each day. The fee for each field trip is $50.
The deadline for registration is May 6. More information about the program is available by calling (504) 524-0188 or visiting ACCENT’s Web site at www.accentoca.com.▪
