Volume 47 Number 5 page 27d-27d

I was so happy to read two stories in the January 20 issue by Aaron Levin: “Psychiatrists Occupy Place in Protest Movement” and “Are Psychiatrists Doing Enough to Influence Public Policy?”

I visited the “Occupy Salem” camps on the capitol grounds in Salem, Ore., twice. Also, I attended a presentation by the leaders in a forum. There were frequent references to Mahatma Gandhi and nonviolence. I was a freshman in a college in India when the Mahatma called for the British to quit India in August 1942. Because of my participation, I was dismissed by the college for a couple of months. Above all, I saw the Mahatma in May 1934 when I was only 8 years old. I have no words to describe that scene. inline-graphic-1.gif
