We applaud APA’s efforts to partner with business leaders to improve mental health care. The perception of employers that psychiatric care is inefficient is described in the June 21 issue.
We have addressed concerns about lengthy psychiatric leaves from work by including a track in a partial hospitalization program for patients who are employed or are unemployed and seeking work. This track has special programming that specifically addresses workplace issues and includes strategies for a timely and successful return to work.
Such programming aligns the needs of patients (employees) to recover from debilitating psychiatric illnesses and return to their normal psychosocial routines, and the needs of employers to have productive employees at work.
