It was both sad and encouraging to read the Residents' Forum by Dr. Jeremy
Veenstra-Vanderweele in the November 19, 2004, issue of Psychiatric News:
Sad, because those of us who labored in the mental-retardation vineyard
for many years, on both APA and Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry
committees, might feel that our work was in vain.
But I also was heartened that the cause has been picked up by a current
member—especially one who sees his role as that of "patient
advocate." He is to be commended, and I hope that his words can be read
by every APA member who has any contact with patients.
The disabled are always with us.
