New diagnostic codes for several sleep disorders listed in the
DSM-IV-TR will go into effect on October 1 (see chart).
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine requested the new codes, which are
needed to accommodate diagnoses listed in the newly released second edition of
the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-2). Since
the sleep section of the DSM-IV-TR overlaps with portions of the
ICSD-2, the new codes will appear in both publications.
The new DSM-IV-TR and ICSD-2 codes share identical
diagnostic criteria, and the codes mirror ICD-9-CM usage; the latter
does not accept criteria as part of its codes, however.
Future printings of DSM-IV-TR will be revised to include the new
diagnostic codes. In addition, clinicians can go to the DSM-IV-TR Web
to download a PDF file of the new codes.
