APA Awards Innovative MH Service Programs

APA presented its annual Psychiatric Services Achievement Awards at its 2007 Institute on Psychiatric Services in New Orleans to innovative programs that deliver services to mentally ill or disabled people, have overcome obstacles, and can serve as models for other programs. This annual competition, initiated in 1949, is supported by a grant from Pfizer Inc.
The 2007 awards werepresented by Joel Feiner, M.D., chair of the awards committee. All winning programs participated in a special workshop at the institute.
The Gold Award winners each received a $7,500 check presented by Manuel Garcia, M.D., of Pfizer Inc. and a plaque; Silver and Bronze Award winners received a plaque.

♦ Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Service (IICAPS) at the Yale University Child Study Center won in the category of academically or institutionally sponsored programs. The program was recognized for an exemplary family-oriented, home-based intervention program proven to help children and adolescents with severe emotional disturbances who are at risk of institutionalization. Joseph Woolston, M.D., accepted the award.
♦ Harris County Hospital District Community Behavioral Health Program in Houston won the Gold Award in the category of community-based programs. The award was accepted by Britta Ostermeyer, M.D. The program was recognized for creatively integrating psychiatric care with primary care, expanding capacity to address severe shortages in psychiatric services, and improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness.

♦ Early Assessment and Support Team (EAST), Mid-Valley Behavioral Care Network, headquartered in Salem, Ore., was recognized for successfully implementing an exemplary early-intervention model in a wide community network. It provides treatment and family support to young people in early stages of psychosis and provides education and support to their communities. Sally Godard, M.D., and Mary Lu, M.D., accepted the award.

♦ The Deaf Wellness Center in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center was recognized for a groundbreaking program that provides high-quality, culturally sensitive care to an underserved and often unrecognized population, builds capacity by training members of the deaf community in mental health care, and educates health care professionals worldwide in caring for this specialized population. Robert Pollard, Ph.D., director of the program, accepted the award.
