It was a pleasant and convivial way to start the day at APA’s 2013 annual meeting in San Francisco: Outgoing APA President Dilip Jeste, M.D., welcomed APA’s new international members into the Association at a breakfast reception. The breakfast was sponsored by APA’s Membership Committee and the Board of Trustees Work Group on International Psychiatrists.

Approximately 75 members from 26 countries attended, including the presidents of international psychiatry organizations. In addition to Jeste, opening remarks were made by James H. Scully Jr., M.D., APA medical director; Joseph Rubin, M.D., chair of the Membership Committee; and Michelle Riba, M.D., chair of the Board work group. Riba also presented certificates of appreciation to the international presidents.

During the reception, there was a slide show that ran continuously in the background. Each slide represented a country and included the flag of that country and the names of the new members from that country. “The reception was very moving,” commented Rubin. “Leaders and new and current international members had an opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from around the globe. All were proud to be recognized as members of APA.” ■
