Your Advocacy Voice is More Important Than Ever!

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.pn.2017.2b55

The results of last November’s election mean enormous changes are occurring in Washington, D.C. During this time of uncertainty, APA is working hard to champion and protect the fundamental issues that allow you to provide the highest quality care to the patients you serve.

But APA can’t do it alone—your involvement is needed to make sure that the Association is at the table to fight and win the psychiatric battles ahead. You can begin by visiting the Advocacy/APAPAC areas at APA Central and near the Education Center (Hall C Lobby) in the San Diego Convention Center and take action during the meeting. You can send letters to your members of Congress through a few quick clicks on a computer or sign up for APA’s Congressional Advocacy Network, which will empower you to become a key contact for APA with your senators and representative. This network helps APA quickly get its message to members of Congress about issues important to patients and the profession of psychiatry.

Also, if you haven’t done so before, join APAPAC and support the effort to educate congressional candidates about mental health issues. APAPAC contributors who have donated at least $250 ($125 for resident-fellow members) are invited to the APAPAC reception on Monday, May 22, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the at the Ultimate Skybox At Diamond View Tower. All others are invited to purchase tickets: $100 for general membership, $50 for early career psychiatrists, and $25 for resident-fellow members. ■
