The event, which was held in May in New York at the Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Room, was hosted by Cynthia McFadden, senior legal and investigative correspondent for NBC News. She was joined on stage by New York City’s first lady, Chirlane McCray.

The Child Mind Institute is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of children with mental health and learning disorders and supporting their families. Its teams aim to deliver the highest standards of care; advance the science of the developing brain; and empower parents, professionals, and policymakers to help children reach their full potential in school and in life.

Awards were presented to the following individuals and organizations:

  • Activist Award: Glenn Close, co-founder of Bring Change to Mind

  • Champion Award: Gavin Newsom, lieutenant governor of California

  • Corporate Advocate Award: NBC Universal; Cynthia McFadden accepted the award

  • Outstanding Organization Award: Brain & Behavior Research Foundation; the award was accepted by Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D., president and CEO and editor in chief of Psychiatric News

  • Community Builder Award: To Write Love on Her Arms; the award was accepted by Jamie Tworkowski, founder

  • People’s Choice Award: Attitudes in Reverse; the award was accepted by Tricia and Kurt Baker, founders

The Change Maker Awards are part of the Child Mind Institute’s annual public education campaign, Speak Up for Kids, held each May to promote children’s mental health. The campaign, now in its eighth year, celebrates people working to improve children’s mental health and provides information to the media, families, educators, and leaders that speak up for youth. ■
