APA Library Exhibit Honors Role of Women In Medical History

An exhibit in APA’s Melvin Sabshin, M.D. Library and Archives at APA’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., honors and acknowledges the important role played throughout medical history by women psychiatrists and mental health advocates. The exhibit delves into the early history of women psychiatrists, from Alice Bennett, M.D., Ph.D. (bottom right), who became the first woman resident physician of a psychiatric hospital in 1880, to Carol Nadelson, M.D. (bottom left), APA’s first woman president. It also recognizes contributions made by women like First Lady Rosalynn Carter (Second from the top, pictured with Sabshin), who has long been an advocate of reforming this country’s mental health system and expanding access to care, and features a copy of the speech she gave at APA’s 1979 Annual Meeting. The exhibit will be available through June.  ■
