Praise for Racism Series
It has been a great pleasure to read “From the President” in the past few issues of Psychiatric News regarding structural racism in APA and psychiatry. Dr. Jeffrey Geller’s frank appraisal of APA’s history with respect to race relations and the treatment of minority and disadvantaged individuals has been refreshing.
My interactions with Dr. Geller were in my role as chair of the Committee on International Abuse of Psychiatry. His passionate opposition to such abuses was as strong then as his evident commitment to solving the abuses that still exist today, whether racism or the neglect of the disadvantaged or the inadequate funding for people with severe mental illness. APA is fortunate to have that passion at the helm during this critical period in history. ■
