Truth in Labeling

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1176/pn.36.10.0020b

In the last 10 or 20 years it became fashionable for some psychiatrists to call themselves psychopharmacologists. It is true that there are psychiatrists who have a Ph.D. in pharmacology and an M.D. in medicine. They are the true psychopharmacologists. Prescribing medication is not the same as having a license in pharmacology.

Cardiologists, dermatologists, and so on prescribe medication, but they do not call themselves cardiopharmacologists, dermapharmacologists, and so on. In my opinion, the title psychopharmacologist without the degree in pharmacology is misleading.
