There is only one candidate for Area 3 trustee this year despite intensive efforts to identify another candidate. The Nominating Committee of the Area 3 Council solicited qualified candidates by writing to district branch and chapter presidents in Area 3. In addition, Area 3 members were asked at least twice by e-mail for nomination suggestions. The Area 3 Nominating Committee then contacted a number of potential candidates for this office asking them to run. When none of these efforts was successful, the chair of the Area 3 Nominating Committee sought the Area 3 Council’s approval of the unopposed candidate and forwarded his name to the speaker of the Assembly. The speaker reviewed the situation and, following approval by the Assembly Executive Committee, forwarded the name of the unopposed candidate, Roger Peele, M.D., for placement on the ballot. Voters are asked to vote “Yes” or “No” for Dr. Peele.

Candidates’ Views

It has been my honor to represent Area 3 for the past two years, the Area that has most frequently initiated motions:

•.

That APA fully supports confidentiality in the legislature, in the courts, and with government agencies. Sometimes APA has avoided opportunities to champion confidentiality. This must change.

•.

That APA advocate for real nondiscrimination, not be satisfied with “parity” that comes as part of a discriminating segregation of the psychiatrically ill into carveouts. Sometimes APA has welcomed “parity” associated with these carveouts. This must change.

•.

That APA promote the need to reverse the damages of managed care, not be satisfied with a “parity” that increases managed care’s intrusions beyond that for other illnesses. Sometimes APA celebrates “parity” in which we have been treated differently from the rest of our medical colleagues. This must change.

•.

That transparency characterizes APA’s governance, that elected APA officers welcome that their votes be known to the members. During most of the last decade, how each APA Board member voted was undisclosed. This must change.

I want to continue to fight for these values as Area 3 Trustee.
