Minorities and Trauma
In an effort to present a new minority perspective on trauma, the APA/Center for Mental Health Services and APA/ AstraZeneca Minority Fellows will sponsor the workshop “It Doesn’t Happen to Us: Insider’s View of Trauma in Minority Communities” at this year’s annual meeting. The workshop, which is being held Tuesday, May 20, at 9 a.m. in Pacific Conference Suite H, fourth floor, Marriott, will focus on the views of African-American, Latino, Asian, and refugee communities in the U.S.
Among the presenters are Jean-Marie Alves-Bradford, M.D., Lacresha Hall, M.D., Napoleon Higgins Jr., M.D., Arunao Rao, M.D., and Eric R. Williams, M.D. They will talk about obstacles in seeking treatment, difficulties in the therapeutic alliance between patient and physician, and distorted perception of mental illness and mental health professionals by the minority community.
