TADS Basics

The following is a brief summary of NIMH's Treatment of Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS), for which 12-week outcome data were published in the August 18, 2004, Journal of the American Medical Association.

Study Design: Randomized, blinded, multicenter comparing the effectiveness of four treatments for adolescent depression:

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) alone

Fluoxetine (Prozac) alone

Combination of CBT and fluoxetine

Placebo pill

Initial Outcomes: Percentage of the 439 adolescent patients who showed significant improvement at 12 weeks with a Clinical Global Impressions–Improvement score of 1 or 2:

CBT alone group: 43 percent

Fluoxetine alone group: 61 percent

Combination group: 71 percent

Placebo group: 34 percent
