Q:How do I choose between a psychotherapy code with E/M and 90862?

A: Look to the primary service you provided. If you have seen the patient just for medication management and provided no or only minimal psychotherapy, choose 90862. If you have had primarily a psychotherapy session during which you evaluated the patient's medication regimen, choose the appropriate psychotherapy code with E/M (90805, 20-30 minutes; 90807, 45-50 minutes; 90809, 75-80 minutes). ▪
