What Does NIH Encompass?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is composed of 27 institutes and centers. According to its Web site, NIH traces its roots to 1887, when the Laboratory of Hygiene was created within the Marine Hospital Service, the predecessor of the U.S. Public Health Service, at the Marine Hospital in Staten Island, N.Y.

Office of the Director

The Office of the Director is the NIH's central office for its institutes and centers. The office is responsible for setting policy and for planning, managing, and coordinating the programs and activities of all NIH components.
