The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has announced publication of new Current Precedural Terminology codes for substance abuse screening (except tobacco) and brief intervention. The codes, issued by the AMA, are 99408 and 99409 and will go into effect on January 1.

“These new health care codes will strengthen the doctor-patient relationship and incorporate a powerful preventive public health resource in America's health care system,” stated ONDCP Deputy Director Bertha K. Madras, M.D.
