Scheiber Awarded

Stephen C. Scheiber, M.D., a distinguished life fellow of APA, completed over 20 years as the chief executive officer of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in June 2006. He maintains academic professorial appointments at Northwestern University Feinstein School of Medicine and at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The American College of Psychiatrists has chosen him to receive the Distinguished Psychiatrist Service Award in recognition of his contributions to American psychiatry, including his leadership in gaining recognition for 10 new subspecialties in both disciplines since 1990. He also was in charge of the institution of recertification and maintenance of certification programs for the ABPN.

The American Board of Medical Specialties, the umbrella organization that overlooks the work of the 24 medical specialty boards, has selected him to receive the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his contributions to the organization as well as his continuous service to the field.

The Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) conferred one of its inaugural Life Fellowship Awards on Scheiber at its fall annual meeting. He had received the Lifetime Educator Award from the AAP in 2002. ▪
