College Honors Groundbreaking Work
The American College of Psychiatrists presented awards at its February meeting to six individuals and institutions responsible for advancing psychiatry through their service, research, and clinical work. Here are their names and the awards they received:
Pedro Ruiz, M.D., Distinguished Service Award: Ruiz was recognized for significant achievements and leadership in the field of psychiatry. He is a professor and interim chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas at Houston and medical director of its Mental Science Institute. | |||||
Donald C. Goff, M.D., Stanley Dean Research Award: Goff was recognized for major contributions to the treatment of patients with schizophrenia disorders. He is director of the Schizophrenia Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. | |||||
Medical University of South Carolina, Award for Creativity in Psychiatric Education: The college selected “Incentives for Encouraging Research Training: An Effective Time-Neutral Strategy” at MUSC as the 2009 winner of the education award. The program is designed to encourage physician-scientists interested in pursuing a career in patient-oriented research by offering a research track beginning in the third year of residency training. | |||||
Robert G. Robinson, M.D., Award for Research in Geriatric Psychiatry: Robinson was recognized for contributing to the advancements in geriatric psychiatry, particularly stroke. He is the Paul W. Penningroth Professor of Psychiatry and head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa. | |||||
Fawzy I. Fawzy, M.D., Bowis Award: Fawzy was recognized for playing an important leadership role in the college. Through the many positions he has held, he has helped define its current spirit of the college and embodies the best qualities of the specialty of psychiatry. | |||||
Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D., Honorary Fellow in the College: Jamison, a clinical psychologist and writer who is one of the foremost experts on bipolar disorder, was recognized for the significant scientific and clinical contributions she has made to the field of psychiatry. She is a professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and codirector of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center. ▪ | |||||
