APPI Authors to Cover Hot Topics

Meet the Author sessions are small, interactive sessions that provide meeting attendees with an opportunity to talk informally with experts on a variety of topics. No registration is necessary for these sessions, but you are advised to come early since seating is limited and provided on a first-come, first-served basis. These sessions, which are for APA members only, will be held in room 237 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel.

MONDAY, MAY 24

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Terence A. Ketter, M.D.

Ketter is the author of Handbook of Diagnosis and Treatment of Bipolar Disorders. He is chief of the Bipolar Disorders Clinic at Stanford University School of Medicine and will discuss the principles of assessment and treatment of bipolar disorder. Ketter will cover diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and quantitative assessment of the potential benefit of treatment (number needed to treat) and risk (number needed to harm).

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Dilip Jeste, M.D.

Jeste is the co-author of Successful Cognitive and Emotional Aging. He is the Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging, director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego. He will discuss brain health and wellbeing in older adults and will review the contributors to and interventions for facilitating successful cognitive and emotional aging in people with and without mental illness.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

T. Byram Karasu, M.D., and Sylvia R. Karasu, M.D.

The Karasus are the authors of The Gravity of Weight: A Clinical Guide to Weight Loss and Management. Obesity has been called a genetic disorder, a metabolic disorder, a disorder due to a toxic food environment, and even a brain disease. Psychiatrists should be aware of how obesity is diagnosed, what impact it can have medically and psychologically, and psychological, pharmacological, and surgical approaches to treatment.

TUESDAY, MAY 25

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Mina K. Dulcan, M.D.

Dulcan is the editor of Dulcan's Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is the Osterman Professor of Child Psychiatry and Head of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Children's Memorial Hospital, head of the Warren Wright Adolescent Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and pediatrics at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She will discuss advances in child mental health and medication-information handouts for pediatric psychopharmacology.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Elissa P. Benedek, M.D., Peter Ash, M.D., and Charles L. Scott, M.D.

They are the co-editors of Principles and Practice of Child and Adolescent Forensic Mental Health. The editors will discuss what is new in the field of child and adolescent forensic psychiatry, both in terms of new content areas and updated information in traditional content areas. The editors will also answer audience questions and facilitate discussion.
