Reminders

• The Opening Session and Presidential Address will be held on Sunday, May 2, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Hall 3E, level 3, Javits Center.

• The Business Meeting and Forum (for voting members only) will be held on Sunday, May 2, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Westside Ballroom 1-4, fifth floor, Marriott Marquis.

• The Convocation will take place Monday, May 3, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Hall 3E, level 3, Javits Center (note earlier start time this year). APA’s new fellows, distinguished fellows, life fellows, and distinguished life fellows will be inducted, awards presented, and the William C. Menninger Memorial Convocation Lecture given by author Tom Wolfe (see Original article: page 6).

• Smoking Policy: There will be no smoking in any public area. This includes hotels and the Javits Center.

CME Courses

As part of the overall scientific program, 100 continuing medical education (CME) courses will be offered at the annual meeting, either in a half-day or full-day format. Those attending courses will receive a CME certificate at the conclusion of each course attended. A full complement of courses will be presented starting Saturday, May 1. Admission to all courses is by annual meeting badge and course ticket only.

Presidential Symposia

There will be three presidential symposia this year: “The Biopsychosocial Model: Myth or Reality?” on Monday, May 3, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Room 1E10, level 1, Javits Center; “Wither Go the States: The Impact of Budget Cuts” on Tuesday, May 4, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Astor Ballroom, seventh floor, Marriott Marquis; and “Reconstructing Postwar Mental Health Service” on Wednesday, May 5, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Room 1E11, level 1, Javits Center.

Presidential Forum

There will be one Presidential Forum this year on Tuesday, May 4, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Astor Ballroom, seventh floor, Marriott Marquis, where the film,“I Am Sam” will be shown.

Review of Psychiatry: Sections I–IV

This year four major topics of current professional interest featuring national authorities will be presented throughout the week in Special Events Hall 1D, level 1, Javits Center:

• “Section 1, Neuropsychiatric Assessment,” chaired by Stuart C. Yudofsky, M.D., Tuesday, May 4, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• “Section 2, Cognitive-Behavior Therapy,” chaired by Jesse H. Wright, M.D., Tuesday, May 4, 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

• “Section 3, Developmental Psychobiology,” chaired by B.J. Casey, Ph.D., Wednesday, May 5, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• “Section 4, Deep Brain Stimulation in Psychiatric Treatment,” chaired by Sarah H. Lisanby, M.D., Wednesday, May 5, 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

New Research

The new research program will build upon the experience of past successful activities, continuing the trend toward broader opportunities for exposure by clinicians to new research findings. Topics likely to be covered include AIDS and HIV; anxiety; alcohol and substance abuse; eating, mood, and personality disorders; schizophrenia; psychosocial research; geriatrics; health services; and psychopharmacology.

The new research program will begin on Monday, May 3, at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with “New Research Young Investigators’ Poster Session 1,” which was established to encourage medical students, residents, and research fellows to submit abstracts for presentation to highlight the scientific work of young investigators in psychiatry and emphasize the value of their efforts. This session provides a forum in which young investigators may interact with their peers from around the country, along with attending senior investigators.

This session will be followed by “Young Investigators’ Oral/Slide Sessions 2-4” from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by Poster Session 5 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be five more poster sessions, two each Tuesday and Wednesday, May 4 and 5, noon to 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and one on Thursday, May 6, noon to 2 p.m. The oral/slide presentations and the poster sessions will be held in the Javits Center.

Three “research consultations with” sessions will be held one each day on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, May 3 to 5, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Javits Center. This series allows junior researchers an opportunity to discuss difficult issues with prominent colleagues. These are limited to 25 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Master Educator Clinical Consultations

There will be 12 master educator clinical consultation sessions. This series features clinically based seminars with outstanding educators from throughout the country. Formats and subject matter will vary, but all will utilize clinical material offered by participants. These sessions are limited to 25 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. They will be held at the Javits Center from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, May 3 to 6, and are for APA members only.

Medical Updates

There will be four medical update sessions, one each on Monday through Thursday, May 3 to 6, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Room 1E13, level 1, Javits Center. Topics include irritable bowel syndrome, hepatitis B and C, better sex, and obesity.

American Psychiatric Publishing Inc.

American Psychiatric Publishing Inc. (APPI) will feature more than 40 new book titles and distribute free copies of the most recent issues of its six journals and Psychiatric News. APPI will also demonstrate the American Psychiatric Online Library, its Web-based collection of journals, and the new APPI Web site.
