Annual Meeting Attracts World-Renowned Lecturers

APA’s annual meeting has for years featured lectures, symposia, and workshops led by the brightest lights in psychiatry and medicine.

This year’s meeting in New York City is no exception, with dozens of lectures by distinguished psychiatrists, noted authors, and world-leading researchers. Here is a sampling of what this year’s meeting has to offer:

Eric Kandel, M.D., Nobel Prize-winning psychiatrist and author of the award-winning 2012 book The Age of Insight, will lecture on “Memory Dysfunction and Dementia.”

“Psychiatric Illness, Psychiatric Treatment, and Pregnancy Outcomes” will be discussed by Yale women’s mental health expert Kimberly Yonkers, M.D.

Former Obama White House advisor and current vice provost at the University of Pennsylvania, Ezekiel Emmanuel, M.D., Ph.D., will discuss “The Affordable Care Act and the Future of Mental Health Care in America.”

Thomas Insel, M.D., director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), will present the lecture “From Soup to Circuits” as part of the NIMH track. The NIMH track will also include sessions on the newest neuroscience and clinical research.

Andrew Solomon, author of New York Times bestseller Far From the Tree, will discuss “Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity.”

E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., founder of the Treatment Advocacy Center, will present the lecture “The Strangest Disease: The Pathetic Past but Hopeful Future of Schizophrenia.”

Richard Kogan, M.D., a Juilliard-trained concert pianist and Harvard-trained psychiatrist, will give a special presentation on “Rachmaninoff and His Psychiatrist,” an exploration of the life, mind, and music of the great Russian composer and pianist with a focus on Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who cured Rachmaninoff of writer’s block and a severe depression.

Other presenters include Nora Volkow, M.D., director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse; Gary Gottlieb, M.D., president and CEO of Partners Health System; Karl Deisseroth, M.D., a professor of bioengineering, psychiatry, and behavioral sciences at Stanford University; and Steven Hyman, M.D., former NIMH director.

APA members are encouraged to take advantage of advance registration fees. Registration rates have not increased from 2013.
